Intro to Oil Painting - 12/15
Introduction to oil painting with local artist, Kayla DeVitoAbout this experience
New Location: Classes are now held in a new location: 811 Bay Street Ste 5 in Historic Beaufort.
Our beautiful new, light-filled classroom is inside an 1880s building, upstairs. Please plan accordingly if you have an issue with stairs. Due to the historic nature of the building, we do not have an elevator.
Time: Most classes are held 1pm-4:30pm. The ending time is an approximate time, as all images and classes are different and may vary in their length.
New Rate: We have transitioned into holding smaller classes (around half the size they were before) so classes are now more intimate and hands-on. You will receive much higher attention to detail, and classes will feel more relaxed. Because we're now only able to teach 6 students at a time, instead of the previous 11, and we'll only be holding 2-3 a month instead of the previous 4-5, our rates have raised. We understand this is an investment for many people, but we can promise you, it is worth it. Please see the Why This Class? and the Student Works + Portfolio pages if you're on the fence.
Parking: Metered parking spots have 2-hour limits and take card or change. The parking lot located at the marina (only two blocks from our studio) has an 8-hour limit. However, all downtown parking is free on Sundays, with no time limit. Please pay attention to which day your class is scheduled on, and plan your parking accordingly.
Beaufort: If you'll be visiting our lovely little coastal town, welcome! Our new studio is located right in the heart of our historic downtown area, filled with restaurants, gorgeous views, boutique hotels/BnBs, coffee shops, charming retail and more.
Class Details: In this class, we'll go over the very basics and beginnings of oil painting, from concept and perception, to basic color theory, use of mediums and solvents, techniques, safety precautions, introductions into the paints themselves/their capabilities, and much more.
Beginning to oil paint can be scary! There's so much to learn and it's all so overwhelming. After this class, you'll be able to walk away with confident knowledge of a centuries-old tradition that can pave the way for endless creative possibilities.
We will be painting a 9x12 canvas using the reference image shown on this page. You will take the painting with you, and it will take a few days (or more) to dry. We will provide an open-top box for transport at no cost. If you're flying in, we can also ship your painting, once dry, for an addition $14 fee.
This class is for beginners, for those who need a refresh or for those established painters looking to dip their toes into the world of oils.
Please see the Why This Class? and the Student Works + Portfolio pages if you're on the fence.
Class Size: This is a small class with limited seats of 6 students.
Instruction: This class is taught by local artist, Kayla DeVito. Kayla's husband, Matt, will also be lending a hand to aid in assistance or answer questions.
What to Bring: All necessary materials will be provided. Feel free to bring some snacks and refreshments for yourself if you'd like. You are more than welcome to bring wine.
European Painting Retreats: Interested in painting with Kayla abroad? Kayla and Matt teach all over Europe on retreats, and you can join! Please see the "Travel" tab under "Art Classes" at the top of this page to see upcoming trips, or sign up for our email newsletter at the bottom of the page.

CANCELLATION POLICY:
Due to the high-demand for these classes, we do not allow cancellations. We do, however, allow a date change, so long as we have a space on a new date available for you. Keep in mind many of these classes book out months in advance. Should you need to move your date, you may have to wait another month or two for your next class. You can move your class date by clicking over to the Painting Class Transfer Page.
You will receive two email reminders leading up to the event: one the week of, and one the day before.
NO SHOW POLICY:
We will not and do not issue any amount of refund for no-shows, nor can we accommodate you in another class (because they're nearly always at capacity.) You will receive two email reminders leading up to the event: one the week of, and one the day before. Should you encounter an emergency and are unable to attend, please email hello@amidstthealders.com as soon as you're able to.
We are unable to accommodate no-shows because the class-specific supplies have already been purchased and set up (and therefore wasted) when you don't show up for class. Since these classes are in high-demand, a no-show also takes away from someone else who wanted to be in that seat.
By purchasing a class seat, you agree to our cancellation and no-show policies. Thank you for understanding.
Your Host
Kayla DeVito has lived in South Carolina her whole life, and has called the Lowcountry home for 11 years. She has been a self-employed artist, in one sense or another, for 13 years now. Her work, ranging from photography to writing to design, has been featured in several notable national publications. Kayla is a self-taught oil painter, heavily inspired by her beautiful coastal surroundings. Her traditional techniques are coupled with nontraditional ones, paving the way for her unusually haunting style of "moody coastal" impressionist art. She sometimes draws heavily on darkness and light with high contrast, to depict life's delicate balance of relentlessness and mercy. She enjoys teaching because it allows her to share a gift that saved her life. We hope you enjoy these classes as much as we enjoy teaching them.
